Treasure hunts are all of the rage, from Disney’s hit film,’National Treasure,’ to NBC’s new show,’Treasure Hunters.’ This summer, everybody can take part in a treasure hunt and earn an opportunity to win prizes while giving to a cause : academic grants for the kids and spouses of U.S. Squaddies . A wish to thank the troops galvanized Rachel and Kelsi Okun, sisters from McLean, Va, to form ThanksUSA, a national treasure hunt to benefit army families. Among the prizes are a Harley-Davidson bike, a big-screen home theater system, and visits to the 2007 Super Bowl, the Daytona 5 hundred, London and Cairo, Egypt. Each chapter tests participators’ understanding of American history, preferred culture, geography and minutiae relating to a certain state. Players who successfully answer all twelve stages are able to win the $100,000 grand prize package including a Washington, D.C, journey to look for a treasure chest crammed with jewellery, rare gemstones and centuries-old coins. Voter and lasts thru Sept. Collusion is free, but donations toward the bursaries are highly encouraged.
‘The least we could do for those heroes of America is to help their youngsters and spouses have a future full of optimism as they’re helping all the U.S.’s spouses and kids have better futures, too,’ writes Rachel, ten, in an essay describing the way the concept came to completion. Rachel and Kelsi invented the theory after reading Michael Stadther’s book,’A Treasure’s Trove.’ The sisters designed ThanksUSA’s trademark and helped with research for the questions. The clues were a cooperative effort among the girls, their mom and pop, a teacher and other volunteers.
